Last night’s events initiated another seven days of celebrating art in Berlin; ranging across all aspects of the art world, Berlin Art Week includes exhibitions, private collection viewings, performances, discussions, art fairs, parties and more. Held at venues throughout the city until September 20th, the next days are packed with events to attend focused on international and local artists. While you can easily cater the program to your liking, we’ll give you a few recommendations of our own:

What: STADT/BILD (Image of a City)  – Welcome to the Jungle

This edition of STADT/BILD features a group show featuring artists who address and further question our notion of ‘the good life’. The works focus on a abstract jungle theme involving wildness, escapism and pristine visualization. Alongside you are welcome to attend a walk through the exhibition with Ellen Blumenstein, KW’s Chief Curator.

Where: KW Institute for Contemporary Art

What: Eyes Wide Open! 100 Years of Leica Photography

More then 300 photographs, magazines, documents and photo books will highlight the connection between Leica and 35mm photography in the 20th century.

Where: Amerika Haus – C/O Berlin

What: Paul McCarthy

Somewhat controversial American artist Paul McCarthy will be involved in this years Berlin Art Week, not with a inflatable butt-plug holding gnome or giant turd, but rather a stirring, hyper-realist silicone cast of his lifeless body. Placed on a table in the centre of the pavilion, visitors are welcomes to observe and and ponder the poignancy of death and rituals involved with it.

Additionally, Volksbühne will host the screening of Rebel Dabble Babble Berlin, involving both Paul and his son Damon.

Where: Schinkel Pavillon

What: Bernard Frize

French artist Bernard Frize won this years Käthe Kollwitz Prize, given by Akademie der Kunste. His sensual and complex practice of painting highlights the use of conceptual and elaborate use of colour and technique.
